    No, I'm not talking about me, and I'm not talking about Chad Holtz. I'm talking about Jackson Baer, a youth pastor who was fired last spring because he doesn't believe in the traditional Western view of hell as eternal, conscious torment. I'll let him tell you the rest of his story. This is just another example of how the doctrine of hell often acts as a litmus test to help people determine if you're one of "us" or one of "them."

    In terms of 20th century villainy, most people's go-to guy is Adolph Hitler. Apart from his obviously abhorrent crimes, another contributing factor may be the Nazis' striking iconography, which has made them the ideal villains in so many films, novels and comic books over the years. So when we think of history's worst butchers, Hitler is the first person who comes to mind. However, in terms of sheer numbers, Joseph Stalin wins the prize as Europe's most egregious killer. While Hitler is blamed for around 12,000,000 deaths, Stalin was directly or indirectly responsible for the deaths of over 23,000,000 people.

    That's how the father of one of my childhood friends use to refer to Muamar Qaddafi back in the early 1980s when Libya was declared a pariah state for acquiring chemical weapons. Of course, those were also the days when Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden were Western allies against the Soviet Union instead of faces on the CIA's most-wanted list. Lest you think my friend's dad uncouth, he was merely voicing the common tendency to reduce anyone who dared oppose the West to madman status. How else to explain their behavior?     It was a sarcastic piece penned during the first Gulf War. The first line went like this:
    Saddam Hussein, what a righteous name Change all the A's to O's Then you'll have a label that is better able to describe him head to toe.
    I know, painful. So I'll spare you the rest of it. Especially since it may unnecessarily raise some political hackles south of the border (the Canadian border, that is). All that to introduce our second set of web banners, which feature another former Western ally-turned-villain.     Which makes me think these banners might be more effective at getting us to re-think our attitude

    I've been a fan of Frank Herbert's Dune saga since I was a teenager, but I've never read it all the way through. So I was pretty excited when my seven-year-old son Zeph gave me all six books for Christmas this year. (Truth be told, I actually found the books in a thrift store and then secretly gave them to my wife and suggested that she have Zeph give them to me for Christmas...)     In the interest of pushing a few buttons--and enlisting you folks in helping us promote Hellbound?--over the next several days we will be releasing some new web banners that you can put up on your blog, Facebook page or the Westboro Baptists' web site. (If you can figure out how to hack into it.) As you might guess from our first version, our banners will feature a rogues gallery of terrorists, mass murderers and dictators who would make almost anyone's list of the "Five People You Meet in Hell."     Just returned yesterday evening from a quick trip to LA for some marketing and distribution meetings, only to wake up to a blizzard today. Visibility outside my window is around 50 feet right now, and the snowfall is horizontal. As a transplant from Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, I couldn't be happier. This weather makes me feel right at home. Of course, it also makes me think of the Norse version of hell, which is ice cold. Come to think of it, so is the lowest level of Dante's Inferno.
