I can indeed hardly see how anyone ought to wish Christianity to be true for if so the plain language of the text seems to show that the men who do not believe, and this would include my father, brother and almost all of my friends, will be everlastingly punished. And this is a damnable doctrine. — from The Autobiography of Charles Darwin

  1. Unfortunately most people use this as apologetic proof for ECT. If Darwin hated it it must be truth! They do not take into account that this is still a man made in the image of God of whom God has said,

“They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through EVERYTHING God made, they can clearly see his invisible QUALITIES—his eternal power and DIVINE NATURE. So that they are without excuse.”

I think Romans one is covering more ground than just “scandalous” sin here. If it was indeed ECT that kept Darwin from seeing Christ then I believe the Church will have to answer to God as Eliphaz did when God said,

“I am angry with you and your two friends, for you have not spoken accurately about me, as my servant Job has.” Job 42:8

  2. As they say, “sorry Charlie”. At least you get to be with family and friends. Or, maybe not. I think hell is simply separation from God. In such a vacuum, connection with others would be well……….maybe just watch the movie, “Lord of the Flies” and you’ll see. People’s dark side, in all it’s unrestrained splendor, with the “Lord of the Flies”, that would be Beelzebub, egging you on. What could be more……..hellish?

  3. Jim I must say your comment was extremely flippant. How could you dismiss another human being like that when you believe he is in a place you call hell “separated from God”? There seems to be some relish in your voice imagining that Darwin is alone in hell with all it’s “unrestrained” evil.

Your view reflects a very low view of God’s holiness and honor. No one will be able to keep a “dark side” against God forever. That would be dualism and it makes the cross and resurrection of Christ a failure. “Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the GLORY of God the FATHER” (not judge). This is clearly worship. God apparently knows how to love us all back to Himself.

Also you turned the Biblical metaphor of fire and brimstone (a “consuming” and “refining fire”) into a very UNbiblical idea of a never-ending sin fest where billions of humans are consigned to cycle sin, evil, hatred and death forever. This is NOT in the Bible but came from C. S. Lewis’ imagination in an attempt to make sense of what he perceived to be an eternal hell.

BTW How do you keep from transferring that attitude toward the billions now alive in this world who are sure to miss the boat and end up in hell forever? Do you detach?

  4. Well there’s always Annihilationism.
