Lately I've been thinking a lot about fundamentalism in preparation for an upcoming project I'd like to do on Rene Girard's mimetic theory. As part of the development process, I've been doing a series of presentations to help me workshop the material. I've never approached a documentary project in this way before. However, I'm finding the opportunity to "test drive" the content with various groups tremendously fruitful. I'm keying in on the issue of fundamentalism, because I begin my presentation with a "state of the union" on religion. I note how in the mid-20th century, sociologists and other qualifiedRead More

A brief excerpt:Kevin Miller is an incredibly lucky person. He releases a movie about Hell on DVD the same week the new Pope says even Atheists go to Heaven. The topic of the movie is suddenly incredibly relevant in the Christian faith. There are quite a wide variety of interviewees in the film, although I don't think it is unfair to say some of them are given more weight than others. Granted, it is also not unfair that this happened. Let's face facts: the Westboro Baptist Church are a bunch of crackpots and should be treated as such. In

I've been pleasantly surprised by the positive response to my recent post Christ or antichrist? However, perhaps not so surprisingly, it has not gone without criticism. The central critique goes something like this: You criticize binary thinking, but the entire post is written within a binary framework--the Sacrificial god vs. the Self-sacrificing God. I admit it may appear that way on the surface, and it was something I was conscious of while writing the piece. However, as I allude toward the end of my post, I don't see the two views of God as discrete categories but ratherRead More

Back in January 2011 when I first embarked on Hellbound?, I had no idea how deeply political the idea of hell could be. For me, the film was more of a personal journey, my attempt to grapple with a concept that had both repelled and fascinated me throughout my journey as a Christian. As I've recounted dozens of times during interviews and Q&A sessions, it wasn't until I witnessed the reaction to Rob Bell's bookRead More

There's a reason why I steer clear of government programs designed to facilitate or protect homegrown art. On one level, such programs lead to a climate of mediocrity where artists are supported not because they're exceptionally gifted but merely because they fall into whatever category the government has deemed important this year. By way of example, see the recent scandal over an ad seeking a host for a children's TV show on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), which said it would accept applicants "of any race except Caucasian." Any Canadian who has had to endure "Canadian content" on radioRead More

In addition to the extra features on the DVD, we are slowly releasing interview outtakes and other bonus segments from the mountain of footage left on the cutting room floor. Here are the first two items, available to download from Vimeo for a nominal fee:- W. Paul Young, Baxter Kruger and John MacMurray (41 minutes) - In an informal discussion that took place in Paul's kitchen, we discuss the connection between theological paradigms, perceptions of God and emotional states. A very powerful discussion strongly rooted in a Trinitarian view of God. Available now for just $3.
