After reading my post yesterday, the ever-faithful and always thoughtful Drew Smith called my attention to an excellent piece over at Undeception that covers some of the same ground, particularly the all-important question of how we define sin. Why is this all-important? Because if we diagnose our condition incorrectly, our treatment of said condition (or our assumptions about how God will treat said condition) could be deadly. A brief excerpt:If, as the Orthodox have always proclaimed, sin is sickness of the soul eating away at the children of God and a corrupt will is

This idea came out of a conversation with Derek Flood, Brad Jersak and others @ the Wild Goose Festival last weekend. In the context of Derek's upcoming book "Healing the Gospel: A Radical Vision for Grace, Justice and the Cross," we were discussing non-violent views of the atonement. That is, many Christians believe the reason Jesus had to die on the cross was to appease God's wrath so that God could forgive our sin. This view is often buttressed with Scripture passages like Hebrews 9:22, which says, "Without the shedding of blood there is noRead More

This past weekend Hellbound? had a presence at both the Wild Goose and Ichthus festivals. I've already blogged about my experience at Wild Goose. Meanwhile, my co-producer Dave Rempel was at Ichthus. He texted me on Friday saying they were nearly out of swag, which was both good news and bad news. The good news is we had more people visit our booth and watch our trailer at Ichthus than at any other festival so far. The bad news was the biggest day of the festival was yet to come. Thankfully,Read More

I had SUCH a good time hanging out with Frank, Brad Jersak, Brian McLaren, Michael Hardin, Rayborn Johnson, Derek Flood and so many others at the Wild Goose Festival this weekend. We also did a sneak preview of Hellbound? on opening night. I was pretty nervous considering four of my cast members were there (three of whom had yet to see the film) but it couldn't have gone better--complete with fireflies dancing in front of the screen and the occasional snort from the twoRead More

Over at Video! Audio! Disco!, Joshua M. Walters has posted a great little excerpt from The Indispensable Guide to God's Word by Donald J. Brash that helps you sort through the four main options for how you might understand the inspiration of the Bible (or any religious text for that matter). Well worth the ten-minute read. BTW: I think this discussion is fundamental to any discussion about hell, b/c if we can't agree on whatRead More

We just wrapped up a very successful weekend at Atlanta Fest, which took place inside beautiful and historic Stone Mountain Park. Throughout the three-day festival, we showed our trailer to nearly 700 people and interacted with hundreds more. The list of new friends we made include the bands Seldon, Skies, A Hero Remains, Your Chance to Die and S.O.G. As someone who has always been highly skeptical of the entire Christian music industry, I was actually impressed with a number of the acts, particularly theRead More

It's called Rethinking Hell. If you don't know what Conditional Immortality is, that's all the more reason to visit the site. In a nutshell, it's the view that eternal life is a gift that is only granted to those who are in Christ. Everyone else simply stays dead. Of course, there are a couple of slight variations on this view. Some Conditionalists believe everyone will be resurrected, but only the righteous will receive eternal life. The rest will be annihilated. Some also believe that annihilation will be preceded by punishment. Just goes to show that nothing is asRead More
