I don't think I'd heard of Derek Flood before yesterday, but I'm glad I stumbled his article, "The Way of Peace and Grace," which was recently published in Sojourners Magazine. In it, Flood suggests that the Apostle Paul's conversion was actually a conversion away from the religiously sanctioned violence he had formerly embraced as a Pharisaic heresy hunter. From the article:"Paul's conversion from religious violence to the way of grace in Christ became the interpretive lens through which he subsequently read all of scripture. This enabled him to sort through the Hebrew Bible's competing

We've had a tough time figuring out how to better organize the resources on that page, especially the books, seeing as there are so many of them. At first I thought it would be okay to leave things a little random, with the newer additions near the top so that people might stumble across something they might not read otherwise. But yesterday we decided the simplest thing to do was put them in alphabetical order according to the last name of the author. So take a look. We added some new books yesterday as well. And if youRead More

And now for the long(ish) version: I first encountered British philosopher John Stuart Mill in my Political Science 101 class, where one of my assigned texts was On Liberty. He didn't mention hell in that book, but he certainly had some harsh words for it in his autobiography. Like many people today, Mill saw a logical contradiction between a loving God who also "could make a Hell: and who could create countless generations of human beings with the certain foreknowledge that he was creating them for this fate." When confronted by such an image of God, heRead More

I'm still processing this, but in this lecture, celebrity atheist/neuroscientist/philosopher Sam Harris argues strongly against the notion of free will. (A concept of which I'm also highly skeptical.) His lecture is essentially a summary of his latest book, Free Will. I'd love to hear your response.Read More

After reviewing the first 30 minutes of Hellbound? down in my office, my 11-year-old son Huw disappeared upstairs into the Lego area of our living room (which occupies about 1/3 of the space) and set about constructing something that he refused to show me until it was finished. In case it's not clear from the photo, it's a Lego version of our original poster concept featuring an elevator icon in danger of descending into hellfire. Proud father.Read More

Whose wrath was satisfied the day Jesus died--God's? Ours? The devil's? Is God a being whose wrath needs to be satisfied before he can forgive? Is the crucifixion of Jesus an expression of God's wrath or an expression of his love? Does the Crucifixion resemble the sort of eternal punishment awaiting those who reject God, or is it an image of the lengths to which God is willing to go to rescue us from such a fate? Can it be both? How you answer these questions has a direct bearing on how you conceive of hell--its purpose, duration, who goes there (if anyone), forRead More

It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes an army of volunteers to help make a movie like Hellbound? a success. As we prepare our theatrical release strategy for the film, we are looking for individuals and groups in various communities across North America (and beyond!) who are willing to become Hellbound? ambassadors ("Hell-raisers"?) in their community. In particular, we are looking for people who can recommend ideal neighborhoods and venues in which to release the film. We are also looking for partners who are willing to help promote the film to their friends,Read More

Filmmaking is such a difficult process that I'm a big advocate of taking a moment to celebrate every milestone, no matter how fleeting that moment may be. So while I was quite busy yesterday dealing with bugs on the web site, firing out our press release and responding to queries (while simultaneously packing and traveling to the Okanagan with my family), I made sure to steal a bit of time to merely bask in the glow of accomplishment. We made something, and we shared it with the world. And a lot of people liked it. There's no better feeling thanRead More
